The Navy has become a Mundcar

The Indian Navy, god bless them and those in the army who fight under freezing conditions in Ladakh where I was told in May this year on a trip to Leh that it is painful to even take a leak, given the temperatures there; can however be a pain in the neck. It’s lording over scarce land in Goa rankles even those who respect the navy and what it stands for. I am not holding a brief for the navy in today’s rather tedious circumstances, but when chief minister Manohar Parrikar says he will ask prime minister Manmohan Singh to vacate the navy from Dabolim and base it in Mopa, this is serious roll-over-laughing stuff.

If wishes were horses…

The Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) which I have often described in this column as a group of fun loving fellas who take the role of entertaining themselves far more seriously than was intended for them; which was understandable under Congress rule.  But a year into the Bharatiya Janata Party rule, and we all thought the ESG would be reined in by chief minister Manohar Parrikar; he appears not to have had the desired effect.  In fact, that feel good effect (of Parrikar being elected) is slowly but surely vanishing.  As they say, if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.

BJP now the party goer

It used to be the Congress that was adept at wasting your tax monies.  It was like an allergy they couldn’t get rid of.  Remember those lavish dinners and entertaining their MLAs and bureaucrats did at the cost of the taxpayer.  Remember too Eduardo Faleiro, the erstwhile NRI commissioner.  He hardly lived in Goa during his tenure and as a result might have even considered himself to be a non-resident Indian.  Congress tourism ministers would plan their travels even as they drove to Raj Bhavan to be sworn in.  I kid you of course, but indulge me, it just might have happened at least with one MLA.  All this is old hat and archived for posterity for moments like this in Lion Roars if you just click at the appropriate place on this website.

IFFI’s expense sheet

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has ordered the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) to negotiate the fee to be paid to local contractors and artistes, hired for the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) 2012, and only release the payments after that.  During the entire month of April and a few days in May, Parrikar made a lot of promises in the Legislative Assembly, many of which would have been forgotten by now.

Eternal damnation

Here is another festering sore of a tale to tell.  A rich Delhi honcho is building his Goa abode on a road widening area in Cobra vaddo in Calangute, right in front of Our Lady of Piety Chapel where parishioners pray.  The site was inspected by the Public Works Department (PWD) on April 9, 2013.  The Town and Country Planning Department (TCP), Mapusa issued him an NOC on March 6, 2007 (DB/21628/07/705) to build what may be a residential house.  The corrupt and truly morally bankrupt Village Panchayat (VP) of Calangute issued him a construction license on March 10, 2007 (VP/CAL/F-13/06-07/L/3914) and later renewed it on February 7, 2013 (VP/CAL/F-13/12-13/R-16/6302).   Since the VP issued its license in exactly five working days from the date the TCP issued its NOC, I checked the March 2007 calendar and discovered March 10 was a Saturday, and March 6 was a Tuesday, that is, five days including the Sunday holiday!
